Expert tip
What you should know
Every transaction affects at least two accounts. Assets and expenses increase with a debit; liabilities, equity and income increase with a credit. The hardest cases are timing differences: paying in advance creates a prepayment (an asset) that is expensed over time, and receiving a bill late creates an accrual. Writing the transaction out in plain English, as this tool asks, is also the best way to spot what you do not yet know, such as the tax treatment.
